Bossy is Back

I must be feeling better. My kids told me I'm getting bossy today.

Go, Tommy!

"I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death."

— Thomas Paine

Are you Funnier than a Sixth Grader?

Top these:

1. Quinn told me he didn't want to go on a walk with me because he needed to "stay home and burn some stuff."

2. After acquiescing to a walk, Quinn insisted on demonstrating how my rear moves when I'm walking. "How do you do that, exactly?" he demanded.

Hungry

I keep thinking my fever is gone, then the four-hour mark passes, rendering the ibuprofen useless. Fever/chills commence. But my headache is gone!

Yesterday, during a moment of fever-free hope, I decided to make a dessert. It takes a while to make because the frozen bread dough has to rise. I paced myself to conserve energy and several hours later - tada! Yummy dessert. I promptly fell asleep due to said effort.

When I awoke, the dessert was gone - completely consumed by my family. This might sound funny tomorrow, but not yet.

102.7

I tried to tell myself that the cough I woke up with yesterday was just because of the very high pollen count. I tried to tell myself that I was shivering because the school had its air conditioner blasting. I tried to tell myself that my muscles ached because of all the good workouts.

Nope.

Wee Scream

A scream in the wee hours of the morning, anyway. . . Not sure it was even a scream. More of a cross between an Avatar war cry and an R2D2 robot noise. Now that we've had time to process, Mike and I agree that it was probably a howl from a cat fight somewhere outside.

But before he had a time to process or put on glasses or slip on appropriate clothing or turn on lights, Mr. Rellim jumped out of bed, ran to Rachel's room and hollered, "RACHEL?!" to which she gruffly replied, "WHAT?!" He then found his way to Quinn's room, but didn't say anything. (I assumed he was quietly checking for breathing sounds while I stifled a scream in my chest.)

Mike returned to our room in less than 30 seconds and said, "Did you hear that?" but fell asleep almost before I could answer. I assumed everything was OK but didn't want to get out of bed even though I really had to use the bathroom. Finally, nature won over my fear of the bogeyman, but I turned on every light on the way, re-checked the kids and did not fall asleep again.

Stupid, freaky scream-like noise.

Enough Money?

President Obama said yesterday, “ . . . at a certain point, you've made enough money.”

Really? That's like saying a person can be pretty enough or smart enough. Are we going to put caps on that too so that no one will have an advantage over another in those areas?

UGLY PEOPLE UNITE! DEMAND FAIR TREATMENT!

STUPID POEPLE UNTIE! GIT WHATS YERS!

Really, a person does have enough money at some point if the entire purpose of his existence is narcissistic. However, charitable people use money to help others and support organizations that do good. We should not put limits on personal income.

Grounded

Quinn is grounded from his Nintendo DSi for the next few days. He shouted to his father, "Well, I feel more sorry for you because now I'm grounding you from my love!!!"

Bring it.

Correction

Once I typed "heresy" instead of "hearsay," but this is much worse.

True Friendship

Quinn and his friend, Rachel ran out to my car after show choir practice. Rachel said, "Guess what? Quinn and I are singing a solo together!" (The song is I'll Be There as sung by the Jackson 5.)

Quinn told his friend Rachel, "And you know it's true. I will be there for you. Like, if someone is being mean to you, I would totally knee him in the balls."

The Trouble with Texts

I received a text from Quinn at 3:05 pm yesterday. It read, "I need to go to the hospital. I just realized my toe is disconnected from my foot."

I knew his foot was bruised and swollen from an injury on Sunday, but I had no idea that the toe would just "disconnect" from his foot - three days later!

Long story short: Quinn's toe had not fallen off, he was just concerned that it was swollen and "not moving right." "It only squirmed." He was not holding a severed toe in his hand. There was no profuse bleeding. There was no pain.

I wasted a lot of adrenaline on that one.

He Didn't Laugh

Mike's car was parked behind me when I left to run a couple errands last night. I had Rachel run in the house and say, "Well . . . at least she got him as good as he got her!" (a line from an old Simpson episode where Homer accidentally bashes into a car in his own driveway - it was his wife's car)

Rachel delivered the line smoothly. Mike moved quickly to the door to check out the (non-existent) damage. He didn't think it was funny.

We did.

Hello, Goodbye

Good riddance old van.
Hello new car.

Late post on the Have a New Husband by Friday book by Kevin Leman. Good read, though not surprising. Top on a man's list of things important in a marriage? - Sex. Fourteenth on a woman's list of things important in a marriage? - sex.

How to get the "new husband?" Provide equal parts respect and sex, get whatever you want. Let me know if any of you decide to try it;)

Attack!

Mrs. Neighbor walked by our house with her doggie on a leash yesterday. Mike turned to say hello and Mrs. Neighbor instructed him on the proper way to pet her dog. The dog then lunged toward Mike and sunk its teeth into his thumb. OUCH!

The bright side? Mrs. Neighbor has been extra nice to us today.

Impatient

That's what I am. I want my washer to work correctly the first time I connect the hoses. I want my kids to put away their clothes the first time I ask them (Well, actually, I'd like them to just notice there are clothes to be put away and do it spontaneously.). I want paint to cover in one coat. I can't stand it when things don't work right the first time.

So, how is it that I maintain my composure throughout my workday? Maybe I use up all my good behavior and kind patience in public. That must be it.

Happy Easter!

The rain went away and the clouds parted to reveal blue skies. My sisters' boys joined Rachel and Quinn for an egg hunt at Grandma & PaPa's house. The youngest was napping at the time, so he had his own hunt later that afternoon.

Steak and Shake

It's not fancy, but we can all find something to eat there. Rachel prefers the meatless meal (pork producers cringe here) while Quinn tried the triple burger.

— Founding Father Samuel Adams

Finally!

Finally! Finally, one of my little sisters' kids did something bad. But he's such a sweet two-year-old that she didn't even get angry with his artistic interpretation of baby powder. Way to go, Easton!

Quinn did something like this once with creamy Desitin all over his navy blue carpet.

Choices

My sister Jamie offered to buy Quinn anything he wanted for his birthday. I suggested that he choose "COLLEGE EDUCATION." Quinn decided he would like to have Jamie keep and maintain a "cuss jar," plopping in $5 for each offense.

Well, I guess that could just about fund a college education.
Good thinking, buddy!

Confusion

My grandma's name is Grace. I got nearly to the last sentence in the following message before I realized my sister was writing to me about her dog, Gracie.

"My friend just asked if Grace would be in his new book. . . . So, Grace's page will be "GraceFace on a t-shirt" and I sent him the "Demon Dog" picture along with a normal one. Grace's presence has also been requested at a photo shoot at Ray's Country Estate in Lake Geneva. She has been so difficult these days. Prancing about, preening in front of mirrors. I thought the day she killed the chipmunk was bad enough, now she's famous."

So Not PC

A Good Word

My dad, who has been retired about nine years, takes care of my nephew some mornings before the bus picks him up for preschool. One morning my nephew said, "You know, Papa Wayne? I'll talk to my dad and see if he can get you a job so you don't have to stay home all by yourself everyday."

Shotgun!

"Shotgun!" It's what Mike and the kids say to call dibs on the front passenger seat. But a word of caution - many people don't understand that meaning when it's being shouted repeatedly by a large man and two tweenagers while sprinting out of the mall toward the parking lot. Nor while leaving church, come to think of it. . .

Crotch Pizza

Imagine walking into your favorite pizza joint and observing a worker in the kitchen reach down into his pants to scratch an itch. It has been years since we ordered what we affectionately christened "crotch pizza." Tonight we stepped out on blind faith to try the place again. Mr. Rellim assured me that the crotch-scratchin' kid has probably moved on (to what other restaurant, I have no idea).

End of story? Yummy pizza.

Spirit Week

The Middle School is having spirit week. Yesterday, Rachel dressed up as a movie villain. She chose the Emperor on Star Wars and sported two light sabers. Today I noticed she was wearing her band shirt and I asked if it was "favorite teacher day" or something. She laughed and said, "NO! NERD DAY!"

Oh, yeah. I hadn't taken in the entire ensemble (pardon the pun) before making the assessment. Nerd Day. Definitely.

AFV

America's Funniest Videos. I thought everyone screamed at the TV when viewing them - either in disgust or high hilarity. According to my California and Michigan roommates who viewed the show with me at our hotel room in Chicago, this is not true. And guess what? Some people actually become alarmed at loud noises (like screaming and yelling) while watching TV.

Weird.

Poor Babies

Sighting

Mr. Rellim reported a Mrs. Neighbor sighting while I was away, though I have not confirmed it. Actually, I thought he was trying to flush her out last Saturday morning when he climbed on the roof with the leaf blower to clean out the gutters at 8:00 am. It was a loud, messy, dangerous job. But, alas, she has not appeared to me.

I'm Baaaack!

Five days in Chicago at a conference. Good stuff, but I gave up using credit cards for Lent, so no shopping stories. I did get to spend time with great friends and eat a lot of spaghetti at Maggiano's (Thanks, Steve!).

Our husbands handled household responsibilities well. I received only one slightly alarming phone call. Rachel called the first night away saying that she couldn't find Mike & Quinn (They eventually found one another, but I didn't quite know what to make of that situation.).

True Test

I'm considering asking Mr. Rellim to drive home with a long trailer full of pigs. If Mrs. Neighbor is home and able, we should get a call from the city within the hour.

True, I cannot take credit for this idea. All thanks and honor go to Polly.

Conspiracy

Where is Mrs. Neighbor? We see Mr. N. walking the dog, but no sight of Mrs. N. This morning at 6:30 am I witnessed him taking Mrs. N.'s new red car for a spin - without her. Is she a late sleeper these days? Did he wake up early so he could drive the car without asking permission? Is she ill? In seclusion? Did he finally crack and leave her at their previous vacation destination?

Why am I obsessing about this?

Conundrum

I'm leaving for Chicago for five days. Should I clean the house or surf the web? I'll have to clean it when I get back anyway. Plus, I'm busy trying to pack food and drinks in my suitcase so I don't have to pay $2 for a bottle of water and $6 for a bag of M & Ms. I'm having trouble with the chips and salsa situation. Wish me luck.

The line was delivered by my husband while standing in front of the toilet with the boy. I guess it's just a form of water conservation. Better than the sign I found in a restroom in Iowa City in 1993:

Percy the Movie

I read the book since Quinn had. Interesting, but very Harry Potter - without the embedded deep spiritual truths.

So, we saw the movie, and as entertaining as it was, it still lacked substance. I didn't feel connected to the characters and the acting wasn't all that great. Speaking of actors - in the book, the characters are 13 years old. In the movie, Percy is portrayed by an 18 year old and Annabeth by a 23 year old actress.

Online movie review summed it up as such:
If there's anything we all can take away from Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, it's that God (with a capital G) is nothing like the silly Greek gods who play havoc with human life, jealously accuse one another and then savagely attack. Their neglected demigod kids must study and train to tackle their preternatural parents' pettiness. God's children don't have to. In fact, He fights for them.

But that's not in the movie; it's in the Bible. All this flimsy flick does on its own is clobber kids with polytheism, severed heads, Vegas excess and lame dialogue. A simpering satyr who's a junior protector trying to earn his horns? Really?

Puppy Love

I realize I don't own a dog, but it is normal for a person to shovel her yard in order for her little doggie to have an easier go? Mrs. Neighbor must think so, because Mr. Neighbor has been toiling to clear the snow from their perfect sod for quite some time. Mr. Rellim remarked that it's either outside work or inside conversation. Good point, dear.

Sunday School Fun

I helped with the preschoolers yesterday. The story was about two blind men whom Jesus healed. I said to the children, "These men could not see. Who can tell me why the men could not see?"

From the back, a four-year-old shouted, "Because they were bald!"

How Much Snow?

So how much snow has fallen in the nation's capital? Enough snow that the Senate had to cancel a committee hearing on global warming. Cool.

What's in Your Clothes Basket?

My friend, Mrs. Bickerson, wrote about going to an art exhibit where a " . . . girl had made a self-portrait with multiple exposures of film with an old camera. She made herself look like a ghost. A naked ghost. A friend of hers emerged from the other end of the line. He dropped off a cat skeleton that he had exhumed and wired together. I think he considered himself a bit of a green artist."

Speaking of naked - I once was in a meeting with a person who offered to show me a few sketches he had drawn. "They are nudes," he said, "Just wanted to tell you in case that would offend you." I should have taken that as a warning, because on about the fourth sketch I noticed that the pencil-drawn nudes had turned into an elaborate sketch of a naked man in a clothes basket.

"That's me," he said. "It's part of my self-portrait series."

I said, "Yes it is!" and continued to pass the sketches around the table. Why did I do that? Why did we keep looking at them? I'm laughing right now just thinking about it. Naked is funny - and completely inappropriate - and funny!

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Mr. Rellim introduced us to a new game tonight. Whenever we see a picture of Nancy Pelosi on TV, we have to scream. The trick is to scream for the same amount of time that her picture is visible. This may be a sign that cabin fever is setting in. Or this could be exactly the release I will need since I won't be screaming at my kids anymore.

Confidentiality

This is a concept that one of the girls in Rachel's Sunday school class does not quite understand. After church yesterday, this girl ran up to me to say, "Well, Rachel told us all about all the yelling! Hahahahahaha! You must yell a lot. She told us all about it." I had to laugh. I couldn't yell at her at church . . .

Anyway, check out the new book I'm working on. Wish me luck.

True Confession

I just left the superbowl party my friend was having because Quinn asked me, "Is the basketball game over yet?" I told him yes in order to get him home and showered before his 8:00 bedtime. Someone will have to tell me how it all goes down. Oh, maybe my husband and daughter can do that. I left them at the party!!!!

I will have to re-read this one sometime soon. Lewis writes about an imaginary journey from hell to the outskirts of heaven. Going Rogue

Really, really good read. I believe this woman is intelligent, practical and a hard worker. She really did get "The Chicago Treatment" after the election, being bogged down with bogus ethics complaints so that she and her staff were unable to govern. Sarah's father is quoted as saying something like, "She's not quitting - she's reloading."

I'm supportive of normal people with real job experiences and real families being in politics. Unfortunately, because of the enormous publicity (fair or not), erratic schedules and high stress, we tend to get politicians who are less in touch with normal America. Why? I think it's because of the difficulty of trying to raise a family in that environment.

I have a good friend from high school who always espoused high political ambitions - until he married a lovely lady and had three wonderful children. I still think he might run for office someday. I'd vote for him.

Flying Paper Attack

Rachel was accidentally assaulted today with a flying sheet of paper during school. It came flying out of the hand of one of her instructors, who had become frustrated with another student, pounded his fist on the podium and tossed his notes out toward the class. Rachel sat in the front row and received the brunt of the attack.

I just emailed her instructor to ask if Rachel would be receiving extra credit for participation in that social experiment.

I hope that instructor has a sense of humor. (I end many posts with that sentence.) It's the hope of my life. We all need a better sense of humor.

Sex Ed

Quinn is taking a sex ed/abstinence education class for the next couple of weeks at his school. They have written homework. Quinn is complaining because "Whoever heard of sex homework? I mean, what do you have to know? I already know everything! Except I didn't know about some stuff. But that stuff sounds boring anyway. I just dozed off today in that lesson. Get me outta this class!!!"

Advice

When shopping at Aldi, do not scream - not even a little scream. Not even if it was in response to having dropped a dozen eggs on the floor.

Judge

Rachel just wrote an essay for her Careers and Applied Technology class that she wants to be a Judge when she grows up. That's ironic, because her brother just accidentally assaulted a circuit court judge Wednesday night at youth group.

Well, Quinn did purposefully throw the plastic ball at my head and scream, "DODGE BALL!!" but it was an accident that it bounced off of me and hit Mrs. CircuitCourtJudge full in the face. (I did make him apologize.)

I hope she has a sense of humor.

Retina

The kids and I had our bi-annual eye exams, complete with retina scans. We learned that Rachel joins only 2% of the population in having a secondary artery running to her optic nerve in her right eye.

"This could come in handy," said the eye doctor, "if, for instance, she would have a stroke or injury to the main artery. It's like she has a back-up system."

I should have stuck with my initial, "Interesting . . . " response. But I couldn't. I had to add, " . . . more useful than a superfluous nipple!"

Maybe Dr. Eyedoctor will forget my comment before we return in two years.

Gifts

Rachel (whose birthday is coming up) asked me yesterday, "Mom, what are my gifts?" I told her she had three but they were going to be a surprise and I hadn't even wrapped them yet. I told her she would find out on her birthday.

With great confusion in her voice she said, "What?! I have gifts and you know about them but you won't tell me?! How long have you known about them? And what are you talking about, 'you need to wrap them?!' These are MY spiritual gifts!"

(Oh, spiritual gifts!) After much giggling, we shared a much more serious conversation.

Between the Lines

Quinn has a friend over this morning. His mother just called to tell me that her son recently had his cast removed following a broken arm and that he should be mindful of his physical limitations. Immediately, it registered with me that Quinn must beat the heck out of her son when he plays there. I don't know if it's true, but now I must investigate.

Report Cards

The kids brought home report cards today (mostly As!). Quinn received "satisfactory" marks for all behavior standards with the exception of "Speaks at appropriate times," for which he received "N" for "needs improvement."

In jest, I said, "Son, you need to open up some more and participate in classroom discussions even when the teacher does not explicitly call upon you. Don't be shy about sharing your opinion with others."

Not detecting the satire, Quinn looked at me with all seriousness and replied, "I know it, Mom. I'll try to do better."

Curves Trivia

While working out this morning, I tried making sense of the trivia question posted. It read (seriously):

Which has more cervical vertebrae?

A. mouse
B. man
C. giraffe
D. all of the above

"More than what?" I asked the manager.
She could not say, except to reply, "The answer is D. all of the above."
Well, that clears things up! They all have more cervical vertebrae.

Upon further investigation, I learned that all mammals have seven cervical vertebrae, with the exception of manatees and sloths.

Hangin'

Just chillin' with some friends back home. Four hours flew by like nobody's business.
