People Talk Funny

I was surprised to learn from someone that "Connie at work had her iris cut." I was even more shocked when she told me that "Mary had her iris cut at work too!" I was wondering how I could protect myself from this workplace accident.

As the conversation progressed, I realized that both women's eyes were in good condition, but the number of hours in their workday had been reduced.

Communication. I need to work on those skills.

Back to School Tomorrow

“Can the liberties of a nation be sure when we remove their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people, that these liberties are a gift from God? ”

—Thomas Jefferson

I Talk With My Hands

I know it. It augments my free speech.

But my dental hygienist? I would have preferred a quicker cleaning experience rather than wild gesticulations near my face with sharp dental tools. I get it that the Wild Splashin' Water Slide was wild, but try using more adjectives and less gestures with the next patient.

Turtle Liberation Ceremony

It was a rather simple decision, really - after winning the small turtle at the county fair, and after learning of the various pricey food and shelter needs, and after being informed of the risk of salmonella transmission. We just convinced Quinn that "Little Tortuga" would feel much more at home in the pond near our home than in solitary confinement in his bedroom.

Quinn visits the pond occasionally to spatter the area with the remaining $6.00/oz turtle food.

The Tenth!

The tenth Rellim cousin was born today. Welcome Clay Dale. I think we'll remember your birthday! 8-9-10.

Responsibility

Does anyone say, "It's my fault" anymore? Has media taken away our free will? Have personal responsibility and critical thinking skills been completely replaced by propoganda? I will not go quietly.

Shout it Out!

“If you board the wrong train, it is no use running along the corridor in the other direction.” -Dietrich Bonhoeffer(German Lutheran Pastor and Theologian)

Unfortunately for the politician, that train often contains gravy. But I love the visual this quote brings to mind. The idea that someone would have the lack of common sense to think otherwise is incredible. But perhaps you haven't been keeping up with our government officials as of late. To them I say, "Beware the November elections!"

Current Nine

All nine of the Dale Rellims were captured in this photo at Leigh and Lauren's birthday party. The tenth has of yet, refused to leave the safety and serenity of his mother's womb. But we are waiting anxiously. . .

India

"No wonder Blaine hasn't been around the neighborhood this week," said Quinn, "he just texted me that he is in India!"

"Well," I mused, "maybe he is in Indiana and just isn't a very good speller."

"Maybe," said Quinn.

Best Pig

I can't tell you all the details because I still can't really tell the pigs apart (Shhh!), but the kids won a lot of ribbons today - even the big ruffled ribbons. Pretty sure that means they did good. This one Rachel is showing won best overall!

Sunday, July 25, 2010

Winner!

Quinn's rabbit, Albus, won reserve champion senior buck. Quinn earned the Junior Showmanship award! They both show pigs tomorrow. Aside from the 4H families, the county fair always astounds me. I mean, where do all these people come from who have more tattoos than teeth?

Girls' Day Out

Guess what we did?
With nearly a full moon last night - and a cloudless sky - the view of the arch from our hotel room reminded me of a scene from King Kong.
Without the giant gorilla.

How are you running the race? Wonder what will be at the finish line?

Atlas Shrugged - El Fin

Finally, finally finished this book. The more I read about the government's socialistic and marxist encroachment on society and how it wreaked havoc in every aspect of life, the more I wished I weren't reading it. Yet I persevered, hoping that there would be a good ending. Well, I guess the ending was good. At the end, the world was finally broken and ready to accept help from those who could. You gotta finish the race!

Danger, Will Robinson!

Did we heed the warning? Yes. Did we walk the boulder barrier the half-mile into Lake Superior in order to reach the light house anyway? You betcha. See? Here are Mike and Quinn being very cautious.

Work for Illinois

Work for the state of Illinois. You'll never be bored. You'll never be rich either - unless you are a politician. I just received an email from an Illinois licensing board requesting college transcripts because they have no record of me having earned my college degrees.

"Really?" I asked the phone receptionist, "Because you issued me the license to practice here approximately 16 years ago, based on the proof of my having graduated. Did those records get shredded with the Blago files?"

No sense of humor, that woman. None at all.

Dingo v Chupacabra

My sister reminded me of the last visit I had with Nan and how she insisted that she had seen a dingo on her farm. We laughed and laughed and we made fun of her for saying so. Now we wonder if it could have been el chupacabra!

My Friend's Keys

I've heard it said that the key to a man's heart lies - in his son's stomach? Keys have successfully re-emerged (I didn't ask at which end) and child is unscathed. Ahhh . . . memories!

Lake Superior

The largest body of fresh water in the world.
So Quinn peed in it.

Vacation

I'll review the highlights:
Excellent hospitality from my sister and her boyfriend at his cabin in the Northwoods.

A day trip to Amnicon Falls State Park with beautiful woods and water.

A pedal down the boardwalk around Lake Superior in a double surrey (oh! how we entertained the public!)

Park Frenzy with cousin Owen in Wheaton.

Taxed Enough Already

I helped organize another TEA Party Rally a couple days ago. There were nearly 300 people in attendance. People who wished to learn more about their government and its elected officials. People who express uneasiness with the expansion of government and the lack of accountability. People who demand fiscal responsibility with the nation's tax dollars.

Unfamiliar with the TEA Party momentum? Here is a quick video interview you can watch. You might even recognize a person or two.

Happy Fourth of July!

What with the warm sunny weather and the sunburned shoulders from the family reunion yesterday, we decided to skip the parade. The candy isn't that good anyway. I heard a radio message on the local Christian station wishing the entire country a Happy Fourth - whether they were attending a BBQ, watching fireworks (many other activities mentioned here), or eating falafel. When did we stop with the baseball, hotdogs, apple pie and chevrolet?

Atlas Shrugged

I don't think I've ever spent this much time trying to get through a single novel! I'm barely one-third finished with this 1100 page epic. Although published in 1957, it reads like the political headlines of today with government overreach and social justice and political correctness and affirmative action (in order to "level the playing field"). I can't wait to see what happens.

In the meantime, I'll be co-hosting a TEA Party rally at Peterson Park from 6-8pm Friday. Come join us.

Peach Bellini

We spent the afternoon at the mall in St. Louis and did a lot of people watching. I found myself thinking that I would be so much happier if I had those cool sandals or if I could find a pretty sundress or if I could buy one of those ruffle-y blouses.

We stopped at The Cheesecake Factory for a bite and sat at the bar next to a small woman, whom at first I thought was on oxygen. With a few sly glances, I noticed that she was not wearing oxygen tubing, but an NG tube. She had it carefully draped around her left ear. And she was missing her left arm from above the elbow. And she was missing her right hand. Her right forearm was lightly wrapped in white gauze. And she was alone, drinking what she told me was called a peach bellini - through a straw. She probably wouldn't be able to safely pick up a glass with condensation.

I watched her sip her drink. I watched her carefully fish out her credit card to pay. I watched as she used her left arm stump to hold the paper still and her right forearm to slide the pen slowly, slowly toward her right arm to hold the pen upright. Then she must have had a tendon in her right forearm that she was able to control, using her right arm as a base, to write her name with perfect penmanship. I recalled a scene from a Daniel Day-Lewis movie when he writes the word "Mother" with his left foot.

We made small talk and I learned that she had been born with a rare skin disease, requiring many surgeries. I learned that she had moved from Texas in order to be closer to the hospital that could provide her needed care. I learned that her name is Emily and that we were both planning to attend the Bold Fresh Tour that evening. As she left, I helped her with the chair. I wondered how much longer she would be able to go places on her own. I wondered how much longer she would have feet.

I realized that new sandals were not really going to make me happier.

Guess Where We Went

The Bold Fresh Tour St. Louis. Pretty cool. Beck is quite the entertainer. O'Reilly must have been up past his bedtime because he was a bit more cranky than usual. The best part of the show was watching how they play off each other and tease one another mercilessly.

Disposable Income

My sister Jamie has some. She uses some to buy jigsaw puzzles. She is often working on jigsaw puzzles. She uses some of it to pay for maid service. I laughed when she told me what a thorough job her maid does. Her maid even put Jamie's almost-completed jigsaw puzzle back in its box last week in order to clean the table it was lying on.

Happy Birthday Cuz

It's Logan's birthday tomorrow happy 15th,
Love Rachel (:

Titan Arum

also known as corpse flower because of its dreadful stench, bloomed this week. Here's a picture of the kids (with blue slushie lips).

Clarification

Nan was my maternal grandmother and lived independently in her own home until her death a few days ago. Except for bouts of depression since the death of my grandfather in 1996, her mind remained sharp. My paternal grandmother is also 84. She lives in a nursing home due to dementia.

I have a friend who says she prays for crazy when she gets old. I'm not so sure. Going to bed one night as an old woman with my wits about me and waking up in heaven in a glorified body sounds OK to me.

The Beat Goes On

The beat of very many family members reminding me of my entrance into a new decade of life. I did make a good haul in the gift department! Thanks, everyone!

Mr. Rellim was unable to attend this party because he had commitments at the World Pork Expo. When asked why he did not have this trip written on the calendar, he looked slightly confused and said, "It's the World Pork Expo! I go every year!" (Sorry, babe, not on my radar.)

That's All She Wrote

My grandma, "Nan," died yesterday. She was 84. This is the picture from our visit last month. Quinn was looking forward to cashing in on her promise to take him snipe hunting this summer.

Ten Years Ago

Ten years ago, I was thirty.
If you look on the wall in the background, you will see a picture of me with my kids on my thirtieth birthday. I look the same (of course!), but Quinn was only two and Rachel was four. How time flies when you're having fun!

Summer Vacation

We've been invited, but I'm waiting for Mr. Rellim to write his work commitments on the family calendar so we can sure up a date. Could be just what I'm looking for - no traffic, no crowds, good company (my sis) and free accommodations. Whadyathink?

Fishing

The kids were fishing at a graduation party at a friend's pond last week. It was the first time in a long time. At one point Quinn ran up to me and shouted, "Mom! My kebob came off the pole! A fish must have eaten it!"

I knew he'd used a worm for bait and I was slightly confused until I saw that his bobber was missing from the line.

Currently Making

Mike and Quinn are gone, so I have a fighting chance of getting to eat one!

Grandmotherly Advice

At my grandma's 84th birthday party, she held my hand and started to give me some advice about turning forty (about which she was thoroughly surprised). "Listen honey," she began, "if anyone gives you any mumbo jumbo you just tell them to stick it -- Oh look! It's a bus!"

Grandma lives in a nursing home as her dementia (or Alzheimers?) has made it difficult for her to take care of herself. The bus driving by broke her concentration, but I'm pretty sure I got the gist of her advice.

Shots!

Rachel and Quinn both got a shot at the doctor's office today for their school physicals. Rachel was anxious, so I told Quinn to read something in order to distract her. He picked up a pamphlet and started reading, "Puh-ber-ty in boys will cause growth of the pen-nis and test-ic-leez. . ."

It was an ample distraction and sent Rachel and I into spasms of giggles.

Did you know that an air conditioner will not cool your house if the switch is turned off in the fuse box? It won't even run! Now we have an air conditioning service that loves us. It was the easiest call of the day.

Plan B

Made a luscious cream cheese pound cake for the baby shower tomorrow. Was outside doing yard work. Upon my return, half of said cake is missing. You'd think I'd have learned my lesson by now about leaving desserts unattended in my home.

Only the Feds

Only the Federal Government would send a letter congratulating my friend on being awarded a large grant through the Centers for Disease Control, then end the letter with this sentence:
"Your award was approved but unfunded at this time."

True story. Did I mention my friend works for the state of California? So this kind of stuff is pretty normal for her.

Go, Tommy!

"I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death."

— Thomas Paine

Are you Funnier than a Sixth Grader?

Top these:

1. Quinn told me he didn't want to go on a walk with me because he needed to "stay home and burn some stuff."

2. After acquiescing to a walk, Quinn insisted on demonstrating how my rear moves when I'm walking. "How do you do that, exactly?" he demanded.

Hungry

I keep thinking my fever is gone, then the four-hour mark passes, rendering the ibuprofen useless. Fever/chills commence. But my headache is gone!

Yesterday, during a moment of fever-free hope, I decided to make a dessert. It takes a while to make because the frozen bread dough has to rise. I paced myself to conserve energy and several hours later - tada! Yummy dessert. I promptly fell asleep due to said effort.

When I awoke, the dessert was gone - completely consumed by my family. This might sound funny tomorrow, but not yet.

102.7

I tried to tell myself that the cough I woke up with yesterday was just because of the very high pollen count. I tried to tell myself that I was shivering because the school had its air conditioner blasting. I tried to tell myself that my muscles ached because of all the good workouts.

Nope.

Wee Scream

A scream in the wee hours of the morning, anyway. . . Not sure it was even a scream. More of a cross between an Avatar war cry and an R2D2 robot noise. Now that we've had time to process, Mike and I agree that it was probably a howl from a cat fight somewhere outside.

But before he had a time to process or put on glasses or slip on appropriate clothing or turn on lights, Mr. Rellim jumped out of bed, ran to Rachel's room and hollered, "RACHEL?!" to which she gruffly replied, "WHAT?!" He then found his way to Quinn's room, but didn't say anything. (I assumed he was quietly checking for breathing sounds while I stifled a scream in my chest.)

Mike returned to our room in less than 30 seconds and said, "Did you hear that?" but fell asleep almost before I could answer. I assumed everything was OK but didn't want to get out of bed even though I really had to use the bathroom. Finally, nature won over my fear of the bogeyman, but I turned on every light on the way, re-checked the kids and did not fall asleep again.

Stupid, freaky scream-like noise.
