Nitwit!

I'm not sure if that's a particularly bad word or not, but I think that's what my son has been calling me under his breath this morning, although it tends to sound more like, "neckwick," which is also a possibility, given his history of hearing and sound discrimination issues. Does anyone know the country of origin for this word? Should I correct him or await the day of utter humiliation on the playground?
